Why did the worlds leaders go to Copenhagen for the climate change summit when they could've...?

If they had to go to Copenhagen and couldn't do a conference call, why do they need big planes and limos and other big polluters in the city? Don't tell me not to have an SUV then have to import limos into this summit.
