What are some techniques for using the Mew Glitch in Pokemon Fire Red?

i am referring to the mew glitch where you need to press START when seen by a trainer but before the "!" appears, then using an abra to teleport. however, i'm getting stuck on that exact part...i can't quite get fast enough to press START in time...are there any techniques out there, or do i just need to practice until i get it?
